PERI-IMPLANTITIS
What is Peri-implantitis and how can it lead to implant loss?
Like periodontitis, peri-implantitis is caused by specific bacteria (periodonto-pathogens) that collect around your dental implants and the tissues supporting them. The goal of treatment is to safely and effectively remove this “pathogenic biofilm” and disinfect the area, helping your body return to a healthy balance. Healthy gums around an implant should not bleed, and the spaces between the implant and the gum should be shallow. These are signs that the treatment has been successful. In some cases, the tissues can reattach to the implant, and with proper care, bone preservation or limited bone healing may be possible.
Aim of the treatment
In simple terms, this treatment aims to safely and effectively remove the harmful bacteria (biofilm) that build up in the pockets around your teeth and the supporting tissues. By cleaning and disinfecting these areas, we help your body restore a healthy balance. Healthy gums should not bleed, and the pockets between your teeth and gums (periodontal pockets) should be 3 mm or less—these are signs that the treatment has worked. The good news is that in many cases, the supporting tissues can reattach to your teeth, and some bone healing can also occur.
