ROOT COVERAGE

Gum recession can expose the root surface of a tooth, which may lead to tooth sensitivity, higher risk of root decay, and aesthetic concerns, especially in visible areas of the smile.

Following a thorough clinical evaluation, treatment may involve a form of periodontal plastic surgery known as a root coverage procedure. This technique is designed to carefully reposition and reinforce the gum tissue to protect the root surface and improve the harmony of the smile. These procedures require precise surgical technique and advanced training in periodontal soft tissue management, an area in which I have developed particular expertise.

Post-Operative Instructions After Root Coverage Procedures

Infection Prevention

  • Take the prescribed ibuprofen as directed.

  • Do not rinse your mouth on the day of surgery.

  • Take the prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed (if provided).

  • Starting the next day, use 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash three times daily (e.g., Perio-Aid 0.12%, Parodontax 0.12%, or Paroex 0.12%). During rinsing, hold the liquid over the surgical area for one minute without swishing.

  • Continue using the mouthwash until the sutures are removed.

Oral Hygiene

  • Do not brush or floss the surgical area until the sutures are removed.

  • Do not perform any mechanical brushing (do not use a toothbrush) in the surgical area for three weeks after surgery.

  • Starting in the third week, gently use an ultra-soft toothbrush (initially without toothpaste).

  • After six weeks, resume the gentle use of interdental brushes.

Note: Chlorhexidine may temporarily stain the teeth. These stains can be removed during your follow-up visits with a simple professional cleaning.

Diet & Activity

  • Day of the procedure: Consume soft foods that are cool or at room temperature. Avoid hot foods. In the following days: eat soft foods only. Avoid hard or crunchy foods.

  • Avoid heavy physical activity and sports for at least 1 week.

  • Do not disturb the surgical area.

  • If swollen is significant or annoying, apply ice packs for 10 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first 4 to 5 hours after surgery.

Bleeding

  • Slight bleeding is normal. If you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, or unusual swelling, contact the clinic or send an email to mobader.dds@gmail.com.
